NEWS: San Diego FC Partners with Cardiff Sockers to Help Grow the Beautiful Game in San Diego County

SAN DIEGO (Friday, Jan. 3, 2025) – San Diego FC (SDFC) is proud to announce a partnership with Cardiff Sockers to deepen both Club’s commitment to youth development in San Diego County and to introduce Major League Soccer to the Cardiff Sockers community.

Cardiff Soccer league was founded in the late 1970s. Last year, the Cardiff Sockers had 25 recreational teams and 36 club teams. Cardiff Sockers has been operating in San Diego County since 1970 and currently has 25 teams and 36 clubs.

“As one of the last community clubs in San Diego, the Sockers are thrilled to partner with SDFC to provide opportunities for the players,” said Cardiff Sockers Executive Director Kraig Chiles. “Cardiff Sockers are proud to be the only club affiliated with the historic San Diego Sockers and look forward to making new memories with SDFC. The future of soccer in San Diego is bright.”

As SDFC kicks off its inaugural season in MLS in 2025, this partnership greatly benefits both Club’s long-standing passion for the game in San Diego County, which is widely known as a hotbed for players, fans and fan engagement.

“Cardiff Sockers have built an incredible reputation as a community leader in grassroots soccer, fostering a fun, inclusive, and competitive environment for players and families,” said Bill Miles, COO of SDFC and Executive Director of SDFC’s Right to Dream Academy. “At SDFC, we share that same commitment to growing the game and providing pathways for development, and we are excited to partner with Cardiff to help shape the future of soccer in San Diego. Together, we will create more opportunities for players to thrive and for fans to connect with the beautiful game.”

SDFC’s objective is to support Cardiff Sockers with programming that enhances Cardiff’s strengths and provides increased opportunities for players and families to experience the game. SDFC and San Diego Cardiff Sockers will be in touch with their communities soon with more details about the partnership.
