San Diego FC today announced the Club has acquired Alex Mighten from English Premier League side Nottingham Forest F.C. and signed the winger to a two and a half year contract through the end of the 2026 MLS season with a Club option for an additional year. SDFC acquired the Discovery Priority to Mighten from Nashville SC in exchange for $50,000 in 2025 General Allocation Money (GAM). SDFC is working on a deal to loan Mighten for the remainder of 2024. Mighten will join SDFC in January pending receipt of his International Transfer Certificate (ITC).

“Alex is an exciting addition to San Diego FC, bringing the energy and creativity we seek in our attacking players,” said SDFC Sporting Director Tyler Heaps. “He has unique and special qualities with his ability to unbalance defenders and we are excited to see what he can contribute and bring to MLS. We look forward to welcoming him to SDFC in 2025.”

The Hartford, Connecticut native will join SDFC from Premier League side Nottingham Forest where he made over 67 appearances across all competitions for the English club, tallying four goals and one assist in that time. The English-American dual citizen was born in the United States and has represented England at the youth international level throughout his career.

“I'm excited to be joining San Diego FC at such an exciting time for the Club,” said Mighten. “The opportunity to develop further at SDFC and MLS is a perfect scenario for my growth as a player. I can't wait to contribute to the Club's success and help build something special in San Diego.”

Mighten joined the Nottingham Forest Academy in 2009 from Arnold Town and made his professional debut for the Reds in a Carabao Cup match against Arsenal in September 2019 at the age of 17. Months later, he recorded his first start for Nottingham in January 2020 in a 2-0 defeat to Chelsea during an FA Cup match. He scored his first professional goal in a 1-1 draw at Millwall in December 2020 and was later recognized as the supporters’ Young Player of the Season during the 2020-21 campaign. Mighten went on to make his Premier League debut in August 2022 against Newcastle United.

Mighten later joined League One side Sheffield Wednesday on loan for the first half of the 2022-23 season, recording 14 appearances and scoring two goals for the English Championship club. The 22-year-old then spent the first half of the 2023–24 season on loan at KV Kortrijk of the Belgian First Division where he made 12 appearances in all competitions during a four-month stay in Belgium before being recalled back by Forest in January 2024. Mighten was then loaned to League One side Port Vale Football Club for the remainder of the 2023-24 season where he appeared in 10 games for PVFC.

At the international level, Mighten first represented England at the U-15 level and has represented England at the U-15, U-16, U- 17, U-18 and U-20 levels throughout his career. Given his dual citizenship, Mighten is eligible to represent the United States at the senior national team level. Mighten was born in Hartford, Connecticut while his father, Eddie Mighten, worked for ESPN. His family returned to Nottingham, England when he was three years old.

Mighten joins SDFC as the sixth player signing in club history, alongside goalkeeper Duran Ferree, forward Marcus Ingvartsen, midfielder Jeppe Tverskov, winger Hirving “Chucky” Lozano and defender Paddy McNair.
